International Women’s Day Talk

MAN, I FEEL LIKE A WOMAN!

I was invited last week to be a guest speaker at an International Women's Day event here in Canberra.

I was on the stage with Politician Alicia Payne, Political Reporter Sarah Olsen, Olympian Gold Medalist Louise Dobson and the Editor of Her Canberra Emma Macdonald.

It was an immense privilege to be in the company of these highly accomplished women.

We each got to talk about our journeys through life. The joys and the struggles. The floor was then opened to the audience to ask us, as a panel, questions.

The conversation always comes back to inequality. I was stunned to learn what female athletes earn compared to their male counterparts. We are all aware of the struggles that women face in the political arena. The concerns of the younger women in the audience were how do women pursue a career when it gets halted by child bearing and rearing?

At the end of the day our strength always comes back to our support network. I work with women every day and listen to their stories. The way they all get through their struggles is by leaning on their friends and families.

We also need to learn to be kind to ourselves, prioritise selfcare and take much needed breaks.

To quote Shania Twain,

”The best thing about being a woman Is the prerogative to have a little fun”
