Eleven women walked the runway at the first Her Smile High Tea and Fashion Show, at The Abbey in Canberra. They were not models. They were mothers, grandmothers, professionals and survivors who had each done the quiet work of coming back to themselves.
This is the third story, in the order they walked.
The woman who couldn't get up off the floor
Phillipa's turning point wasn't dramatic. It was quiet, and it was humbling in the way only ordinary moments can be.
Coming out of lockdown, she realised she had stopped moving altogether. Her job required her to get up and down off the floor throughout the day, and one day, she simply couldn't do it anymore. Not a health scare. Not a diagnosis. Just her own body, quietly telling her something had to change.
That moment is more common than most women admit out loud. It rarely looks like a crisis. It looks like a small, private failure that you carry alone, until you decide not to.
Since working with Her Smile, Phillipa has lost weight. She goes clothes shopping now for pieces she actually loves, not just pieces that fit. She's running, training for a five kilometre run, chasing a goal of getting under thirty minutes. Not for anyone else. For the version of herself she is quietly building, one session at a time.
Her advice to any woman thinking about starting is simple: just do it, even though it feels uncomfortable at first, because it is so worth it.
