They Reappeared! Eleven Women Who Decided Their Story Deserved to Be Seen

Eleven women walked a runway in Canberra.

Not models. Not actresses. Not women who had everything figured out.

Her Smile clients who walked the Her Smile Runway at the Her Smile High Tea and Fashion Show, each one stepping out to share her transformational story through the Her Smile Empowerment Pathway.

Women who had been waiting. For the right weight. The right age. The right moment. Women who had spent years putting everyone else first and had quietly, slowly, stopped showing up for themselves.

They ranged in age from 40 to 75. They came from different backgrounds, different careers, different starting points. Some had been through illness. Some through loss. Some through the particular invisibility that descends on a woman when she achieves everything she was supposed to achieve and still feels like she has disappeared.

They walked anyway.

One of them had lost 27 kilograms and run the City2Surf at 50. Her granddaughter asked her why she didn't walk bent over anymore.

One of them had brain surgery, seizures and redundancy in the same season of her life. She earned her Distinguished Toastmaster award and got promoted.

One of them hadn't worn colour in eleven years.

One of them had stopped looking in mirrors.

They all crossed the gap between knowing they wanted to come back and knowing exactly how. Not because the circumstances were perfect. Because they decided the cost of staying invisible was higher than the cost of taking one step.

That is what reappearing looks like.

It does not look like a highlight reel. It does not look like a transformation photo taken in perfect lighting. It looks like eleven women in their own clothes, in their own bodies, walking forward on a red carpet in Canberra on a Tuesday night — and meaning every step.

In six days I am swimming in eleven degree water in Hobart on my mother's birthday. Completely naked. At almost 64. I am thinking about these eleven women as I go into that water.

And I am thinking about every woman who is still waiting.
